I started painting silk in about 1985. My first items were hankies and then square silk scarves. After some practise, I branched out and then made long silk wraps, table cloths, earrings and brooches and even a waistcoat. Heike, my wife and I were successful at craft fairs and we enjoyed the experience learning how to sell fashion. After a long pause, and to avoid thinking about Covid-19, I decided during the Christmas period of 2020 to start. Whilst I mention it, I raise my hat to all the NHS who are performing at their very professional best to save many lives here in UK. They are outstanding.
Below are the scarves I have painted in this December break. First is The Jacqui Scarf. The process I did to create it is also described on this website. Look at the Silk Painting How to page.
The other scarf is based upon Heike’s favourite planets, namely Jupiter and Saturn. Last Christmas I was given a Dobsonian 200MM telescope. During 2020, Jupiter and Saturn have been very close and I saw them for the first time through my telescope. The experience is amazing. To see Saturn and its halo is breath-taking as are the clouds around Jupiter’s equators. My attempt to bring them onto silk is below.
The Jupiter & Saturn Conjunction
Have fun trying to paint silk. Look at the “How-to” page.
